Tragedy is one of the most important genres of literature, and one of the masterpieces in this genre is The Pupil by Henry James. It is a short story of an exceptionally smart young boy who is growing up in a mendacious and dishonorable family. He befriends his tutor, who is the only trustworthy adult in his life.

Pemberton, a penniless graduate of Oxford, takes up a job to tutor Morgan Moreen, aged 11, a brilliant and somewhat cynical member of a wandering American family. His parents refuse to pay Pemberton as they jump their bills from hotel to hotel in Europe. Pemberton dislikes all the Moreens except Morgan.

Morgan, who is suffering from heart trouble asks Pemberton to escape his family's baleful influence. But Pemberton stays because he has come to love his student and he hopes for at least some eventual payment. Although Pemberton finally takes up a job in London to make ends meet. He is summoned back to Paris by a telegram stating that Morgan has fallen ill. It turns out that Morgan is healthy enough, although the fateful day arrives when his familiar is evicted from their hotel for nonpayment. Morgan's family begs Pemberton to their son away with him while they try to find some money. Morgan is really happy at the prospect of leaving with Pemberton, but the tutor hesitates. Morgan suddenly collapses with a heart attack and dies.

James has presented the relationship between Morgan and Pemberton with sympathy and insight, and the story reaches what some could consider the status of classical tragedy. If you want to read this novel sign up at Mediabinn right away!
